OVERVIEW

1-day course.

CPD points (8 hrs) for all healthcare professionals.

Meaningful learning when things go wrong in everyday Healthcare practice is a professional obligation and a shared goal of the World Health Organisation, Royal Colleges, Clinical Regulators and forward-thinking healthcare organisations. Progress towards this goal is often limited, however, by capacity, capability and/or a lack of training in foundational safety investigation and team learning concepts and practices. The result is that improvements in patient safety can be hampered by a lack of integration of modern Human Factors concepts and methods, both in organisational-level safety investigations and team-based learning activities such as mortality & morbidity reviews.

To address these concerns and others, our Human Factors - Incident Investigation (PSIRF) course is designed and delivered by Chartered HF Professionals for key workforce groups in healthcare. Attending the Incident Investigation course will provide delegates with in-depth discipline knowledge together with a highly personalised toolbox of real world, practical problem-solving skills. These can be applied with immediate effect to optimise safety investigations/learning reviews, enhance patient safety, workforce wellbeing and organisational performance.

Delegate groups will be kept small to maximise an open exchange of ideas and allow participants to interact on an individual basis with the faculty.

OBJECTIVES

1. To understand the Human Factors systems approach to meaningful understanding of highly complex safety incidents in the healthcare context.

2. To identify and address factors (e.g. related to tasks, job roles, work system designs, technology issues and cultural considerations) which affect and contribute to patient safety incidents and day to day healthcare outcomes.

3. To equip delegates with an advanced understanding of HF ‘good practices, principles and methods,’ relevant to both organisational safety investigations and team-based learning reviews.

CURRICULUM

Training focuses on equipping participants with a highly personalised suite of Human Factors systems principles and skills for safety investigations and learning reviews, which will complement their existing professional competencies and elicit a deeper understanding of the ways in which it is possible to jointly optimise system performance and human wellbeing in highly complex organisations.

The course is comprised of an innovative learning model that is structured around the needs of practising healthcare professionals, managers, educators and leaders and is closely aligned with the professional competencies and principles set out by the UK Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF), the NHS Patient Safety Syllabus and the NHS Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF).

Workshops feature highly interactive teaching and skills-development experiences in a diverse range of learning environments, delivered by healthcare leaders at the cutting edge of Human Factors and safety investigation practice, research, innovation and thinking. Delegates will develop the ability to better understand, analyse and learn from complex safety incidents and manage future risks to enhance safety, performance and human wellbeing in the healthcare workplace.

Brilliant course; should be required for all patient safety specialists in the NHS and excellent value for money. I liked the fact that the sessions were fluid and responsive to the classroom needs. I also like the fact that each session is supported by the USB materials including more papers. I genuinely cannot think of anything to suggest as needing improvement.

What an incredible course, the faculty are clearly so knowledgeable in this complex subject but delivered and explained to exactly the right level. I was disappointed when we got to the end; I left the course wanting to know so much more, which is always a great sign of truly brilliant education!

Really good course, I would highly recommend it. The faculty imparted a genuine belief in their subjects and the ability to improve safety and processes using these approaches. Great learning atmosphere on the course too - informal and flexible enough for everyone to ask questions, go off on a tangent but still regain the focus of each day. I left with a lot of enthusiasm!
