Ian Bishop Speaks on the Importance of Human Factors within the Aviation Idustry.

Trainetics Ops Director, Ian Bishop, recently delivered a guest lecture at University College Birmingham (UCB), sharing real-world aviation Human Factors expertise with undergraduate and postgraduate aviation students.

The session took place in March 2026 at UCB’s Moss House campus in Birmingham and formed part of the university’s ongoing commitment to connecting students with experienced industry professionals.

Ian was invited following discussions with UCB’s Hospitality & Tourism and Aviation departments, who identified strong alignment between Trainetics’ Human Factors work and the themes explored within their aviation programmes. UCB highlighted the value of Ian’s experience in Air Traffic Control, Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Human Factors.

Drawing on over 17 years of aviation experience, Ian spoke to students about the practical application of Human Factors within high-performance and safety-critical environments. The lecture explored key topics including, Situational Awareness, Decision Making, Safety Management and Just Culture.

Students were also given insight into how principles developed within aviation are increasingly being applied across other industries including Healthcare and Veterinary medicine through Trainetics’ training and consultancy work.

Speaking after the event, Ian said:

“It was a privilege to speak with the students at University College Birmingham and share some insight into the realities of operational decision-making and Human Factors within aviation. These principles are universal and increasingly important across many industries, so it was fantastic to see such engagement and interest from the next generation of professionals.”

Trainetics continues to work with organisations across multiple sectors to improve safety, leadership and human performance through evidence-based Human Factors training and consultancy.
