Bespoke Human Factors Training Delivered For NHS Blood and Transplant

The subject of organ donation is an understandably emotive subject, with the processes enabling it carefully structured, monitored and audited. The Specialist Nurse Organ Donation (SNOD) involved in navigating this sensitive and difficult process is often presented with dynamic and challenging environments, featuring parties with occasionally conflicting goals, time pressure, resource restriction and often a highly charged emotional landscape.

Objective decision making, even at the best of times, is not necessarily something humans do well or at least optimally. Trainetics was very privileged to be able to come to talk at team days for NHS Blood and Transplant on the subject of decision making.
Over three mornings, to the South Central, London and Bristol donation teams, Matt West, from Trainetics, spoke to the teams about effective decision making. Core to this was the essential connection between good situation awareness and effective decision making, risk assessment, the effects on this from human biases and heuristics and finally emphasising the importance of the Just Culture framework in supporting and encouraging good decision making.

It was a great pleasure to work with such an amazing group of professionals who are so committed to their role and to continuously improving the service for the benefit of all.
