A graduate of the Loughborough Human Factors Masters Programme, Helen is an academic with 15 years’ experience of teaching Human Factors to healthcare students and professionals. She is currently the lead for Patient Safety in the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition at the University of Aberdeen. Helen also has a part-time role as a Senior Investigation Science Educator at the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch and is a scientific adviser in Human Factors and Patient Safety to NHS Education for Scotland. In this latter role, she supports design and delivery of the educational programme aiming to build Human Factors capacity and capability across NHS Scotland.

Helen is a Chartered Human Factors specialist and member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, where she is co-lead for the Pharmaceutical Sector Group and a CPD and accreditation assessor. Helen is also a member of the group developing the CIEHF’s Learning Pathway (Health).

Outside Human Factors, Helen is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, in recognition of a sustained strategic impact in higher education. This includes supporting staff engagement with professional standards frameworks and making recognition decisions based on these. She has held multiple roles involving accreditation and validation of academic and practice-based programmes and is committed to quality enhancement. Helen is also a Freeman of the Honourable Company of Air Pilots.
